Executive Vice President Buck stated, “Ben has done a truly outstanding job for us in establishing our local volunteer program which has included the advisory board structure, communication model, accreditation program, and all of the resources contained online and available during the Pike University Summits. He has established himself as an industry expert in this area and has some exceptional programs planned for release this coming year. I am very pleased that Pi Kappa Alpha will continue to bene t from his service for the next several years.” RECRUITMENT SPOTLIGHT BUILDING A WINNING CULTURE Delta Pi Chapter (San Jose State) Fall 10 Pledges: 28 Fall 11 Pledges: 55 Delta Pi Chapter at San Jose State University has recruited 55 men this fall. This ranks as the largest pledge class in Delta Pi’s history, number one on campus, and top 10 in all of Pi Kappa Alpha. Over the past few years Delta Pi has made a commitment to improving chapter recruitment performance. Chapter President Benedict Concepcion adds, “Success adds to the appeal of a fraternity. When we recruit a large and high caliber pledge class we enable ourselves to be the ideal fraternity. Having the largest talent pool allows us to win competitions on campus and to also make a signi cant impact in our community.” Keys to Success: 1. Transition/Training • The new recruitment chairman was thoroughly trained by the president and past recruitment chairmen. • Evaluated their program and created an action plan to win recruitment 2. HazingPrevention.org is a national organization dedicated to its mission of empowering people to prevent hazing in college and university student groups. They provide education, develop resources and build partnerships with others who believe in the work they do. Pi Kappa Alpha is joining as a Platinum Level sponsor by contributing $5,000 per year to the organization. This sponsorship aids HazingPrevention.org in ful lling its mission by providing funding for programs such as The Novak Institute for Hazing Prevention and National Hazing Prevention Week. 3. Low Budget Events • Small events focused on building friendships • Recruits felt more comfortable which led to higher return attendance San Jose State University is a commuter campus with unique challenges and circumstances. However, that has not deterred their e orts in creating a winning recruitment culture. They understand that no matter what part of North America your chapter resides, the reasons men join fraternities do not change. It is simply the art of making friends. “We don’t need lavish recruitment events to recruit the top men on campus. What’s more important is what happens at the event. All we need to do is ask the recruit questions about himself. He’ll feel more comfortable, make more friends, and will come to more events,” says Concepcion. Even with this great fall pledge class Delta Pi is still focused on their Spring pledge class. “We have built a culture based in recruitment. We’re dead set on improving and moving forward. We’re not nished,” added Concepcion. Pi Kappa Alpha members and chapters will have access to all of the resources available through HazingPrevention.org and a series of educational webinars dedicated to hazing awareness and prevention. Pi Kappa Alpha’s position of absolutely no hazing is strictly laid out on its website and in its Chapter Statement of Position on Hazing (found at www.pikes. org ), which is to be signed by every new member and chapter president each year. The Fraternity believes that hazing prevention is everyone’s responsibility and that one should refuse to participate in any hazing activity as well as refuse to permit hazing to be in icted upon them. SHIELD & DIAMOND • Each captain has 2-3 assistant members on his committee • 25 men involved with speci c duties for the recruitment plan • 4 past recruitment chairmen served as captains “Becoming a sponsor of HazingPrevention. org was an easy choice for our organization because it is already one of our main goals and priorities as a fraternity. We are committed to being a part of the anti-hazing movement and know that the fraternal industry will only thrive because of programs and organizations like this,” said PIKE Executive Vice President & CEO Justin A.
