Zimmerman’s Zimmerman appointment comes after the vacancy created by long time regional president Ryan Flickinger, who assumed the position of CEO of the Pi Kappa Alpha Foundation on September 1, 2011. Zimmerman is a 2001 initiate of Alpha Phi Chapter at Iowa State University. As an undergraduate, he served as chapter president during the 2002-2003 academic year and was the 2003 Beau A. Carlson Brother of the Year Award recipient. He currently serves the International Fraternity as a member of the Volunteer Education Committee, which helps develop the PIKE Volunteer education tracks. Locally, Zimmerman volunteers with two PIKE chapters. For Alpha Phi, he is treasurer of the house corporation and finance advisor on the chapter’s alumni advisory board, holding both positions since 2005. Zimmerman is also a member of the alumni advisory board for Beta Xi Chapter at the University of Wisconsin, serving as recruitment advisor since 2009. In his community, Zimmerman volunteers as a board member of the United Way Rosenberry Society of Dane County and as a board member of the Madison Cyclone Club, a local alumnus chapter of his alma mater. Professionally, he is the president of RMI Mortgage. He and his wife, Amber, reside in Madison, Wisconsin with their son, Cameron. Zimmerman can be reached at chriszim10@gmail.com . Regional presidents are charged with the vital role of recruiting and supporting Pi Kappa Alpha’s alumnus volunteers: chapter advisors and advisory boards, house corporation officers and alumni association leaders. Regional presidents volunteer to serve a two-year term as representatives of the Fraternity in their particular geographic regions. Pi Kappa Alpha has 20 regions in North America. The Midwest Region is composed of chapters in the states of Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. ALUMNI & VOLUNTEER OFFICER ANNOUNCED Executive Vice President Justin A. Buck is pleased to announce the promotion of Benjamin D. Boden (Iowa State, Alpha Phi ’01) to the position of alumni & volunteer officer. In this new role, Boden will continue his work with the Fraternity’s regional presidents while helping to cultivate local volunteers and oversee the development of alumni advisory boards for every chapter. In addition, he will manage the PIKE Volunteer program which encompasses volunteer education and recognition for Pi Kappa Alpha. Boden will take over the primary responsibilities of working with all PIKE alumni associations, aiding in their development and execution of events. Finally, he will also help local chapters as they execute their own alumni relations programs, leveraging their efforts alongside those of the International Fraternity. Boden Boden served as chapter consultant during the 2005-06 academic year. After two years in Chicago, Illinois as a project manager with Centimark Corporation (North America’s largest commercial and industrial roofing contractor), Boden returned to Memphis in 2008 and rejoined the Headquarters staff as the director of volunteer development. In June 2010 he completed the True Pike Challenge. He is a member of the Alpha Phi alumni advisory board and house corporation board, and is a founding father of the Mid-South Pike Area Alumni Association. Boden’s grandfather, father, brother, three uncles and two cousins are all members of the Alpha Phi Chapter at Iowa State University. He is a member of the Pike Loyal Order, President’s Council and the Shield & Diamond Donor Society. Boden received a bachelor of science degree in health and human performance with a minor in psychology and currently serves Iowa State University on its Young Alumni Council as president-elect.

He has established himself as an industry expert in this area and has some exceptional programs planned for release this coming year. I am very pleased that Pi Kappa Alpha will continue to benefit from his service for the next several years.”

PIKE ENDORSES HAZINGPREVENTION.ORG

The Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity is proud to announce its partnership with HazingPrevention.org as a national sponsor for the 2011-2012 year. HazingPrevention.org is a national organization dedicated to its mission of empowering people to prevent hazing in college and university student groups. They provide education, develop resources and build partnerships with others who believe in the work they do. Pi Kappa Alpha is joining as a Platinum Level sponsor by contributing $5,000 per year to the organization. This sponsorship aids HazingPrevention.org in fulfilling its mission by providing funding for programs such as The Novak Institute for Hazing Prevention and National Hazing Prevention Week.

Pi Kappa Alpha members and chapters will have access to all of the resources available through HazingPrevention.org and a series of educational webinars dedicated to hazing awareness and prevention.

Pi Kappa Alpha’s position of absolutely no hazing is strictly laid out on its website and in its Chapter Statement of Position on Hazing (found at www.pikes. org), which is to be signed by every new member and chapter president each year. The Fraternity believes that hazing prevention is everyone’s responsibility and that one should refuse to participate in any hazing activity as well as refuse to permit hazing to be inflicted upon them.

BUILDING A WINNING CULTURE
Delta Pi Chapter (San Jose State)

Delta Pi Chapter at San Jose State University has recruited 55 men this fall. This ranks as the largest pledge class in Delta Pi’s history, number one on campus, and top 10 in all of Pi Kappa Alpha.

Over the past few years Delta Pi has made a commitment to improving chapter recruitment performance. Chapter President Benedict Concepcion adds, “Success adds to the appeal of a fraternity. When we recruit a large and high caliber pledge class we enable ourselves to be the ideal fraternity. Having the largest talent pool allows us to win competitions on campus and to also make a significant impact in our community.”

Keys to Success:

1. Transition/Training

• The new recruitment chairman was thoroughly trained by the president and past recruitment chairmen.
• Evaluated their program and created an action plan to win recruitment

2. Recruitment Team Organization

• 8 Recruitment Captains
• Transportation
• Athletic
• Student Organization
• Off-Campus
• Scholarship
• Events
• Resources
• Tabling
• Each captain has 2-3 assistant members on his committee
• 25 men involved with specific duties for the recruitment plan
• 4 past recruitment chairmen served as captains

3. Low Budget Events

• Small events focused on building friendships
• Recruits felt more comfortable which led to higher return attendance

San Jose State University is a commuter campus with unique challenges and circumstances. However, that has not deterred their efforts in creating a winning recruitment culture. They understand that no matter what part of North America your chapter resides, the reasons men join fraternities do not change. It is simply the art of making friends.

“We don’t need lavish recruitment events to recruit the top men on campus. What’s more important is what happens at the event. All we need to do is ask the recruit questions about himself. He’ll feel more comfortable, make more friends, and will come to more events,” says Concepcion.

Even with this great fall pledge class Delta Pi is still focused on their Spring pledge class. “We have built a culture based in recruitment. We’re dead set on improving and moving forward. We’re not finished,” added Concepcion.
