This month’s cover shows a newly discovered keyhole-shaped pyramid associated with the Purépecha culture from the archaeolog-ical site of Sacapu Angamuco, Michoacán, Mexico. These images illustrate light detection and ranging (lidar) data that was fl own over the archaeological site. The pyramid was unknown prior to analysis of the lidar data. Figure 1 (top) is the full point cloud for a subset of the area. Figure 2 (middle) is the point cloud fi ltered to exclude all returns that are more than 1.25 meters above the returns classifi ed as “ground.” Figure 3 (bottom) is a digital surface model (DSM) created from the point cloud shown in Figure 2. Contours were cre-ated from the DSM and laid over each image to illustrate location of the pyramid and other architectural remains discovered during the analysis of the lidar. These remains were subsequently surveyed and archaeologically documented during the summer of 2011. This research is part of The Legacies of Resilience Project (www.resil-ientworld.com), a multidisciplinary effort to better understand long-term coupled human/environment interactions in Western Mexico.
