M OST I NNOVATIVE N EW P RODUCT A WARDS S HOWCASE — EXPO attendees cast the final votes today for the Most Innovative New Product Awards from a list of nominees in eight categories selected by a jury of industry experts yesterday. All of the nominated products are on display within the New Product Showcase, where trade customers can review and make their selections before the close of the EXPO today. The winning items will be announced tomorrow morning by TV personality Phil Lempert at the Keynote session. The Most Innovative New Product Awards program is new for 2012, designed to highlight the most novel ideas, concepts and products in candy and snacks. During a special session yesterday, nearly 200 products were evaluated based on packaging quality, go-to-market potential, taste, innovation and originality in the following categories: chocolate, non-chocolate, seasonal, novelty/licensed, gourmet/premium, salty snacks, sweet snacks and savory snacks. The panel making the initial selections included Adam Gertler, host of the Food Network’s Kid In A Candy Store ; Harry Balzer, vice-president of the NPD Group, Inc.; Richard George, St. Joseph’s University; and Joan Steuer, president of Chocolate Marketing, LLC. Buyers from BP/ARCO ampm; McLane Co. Inc.; Eby-Brown Co., LLC; Redstone Foods; KeHE Distributors; Walgreen Co.; and Marine Corps Exchange also participated on the panel. Hershey Debuts Lower Fat Chocolate Line Booth 845 — The Hershey Co. is introducing lower fat Simple Pleasures chocolates, which have 30 percent less fat than the average leading milk chocolate, according to the company. The individually foiled pieces are available in milk chocolate with chocolate and vanilla crème centers, and dark chocolate with chocolate crème centers. The company says the products aim to grow retailers’ sales with health-conscious shoppers. Simple Pleasures pack in 5.6-ounce standup bags with a SRP of $3.79. Hershey also is highlighting Hershey’s Bliss Dark Chocolate with Caramel in 8.6-ounce bags. The chocolates have a SRP of $4.19 and ship in 12-and 24-ct cases. In addition, details on upcoming promotions including a Twizzlers sweepstakes and a summer offer of 10 percent more product in 12-ounce bags are available.
