S TILLPOINT AN ILLUSION OF SIZE AND SCALE Both this image and the one on the cover were taken by Matt Cashore ’94 from a helicopter in October 2012, using a tilt-shift lens. The normal application for this type of lens is to help correct perspective in architectural photography or to increase depth-of-field in landscape photography. When used in the opposite way, the resulting images have an unnaturally shallow depth-of-field, which tricks the mind into believing the perspective is one of being very close to a small object. The “matchbox” miniaturizing effect makes real-life structures appear like they belong on a train set or museum diorama. 2 N OTRE D AME M AGAZINE
