AOCS 2011 ANNUAL REPORT 6 Meetings and Exhibits Debate, dissent, discourse, discussion: These “Ds” make up the heart of the AOCS meeting experience. AOCS Meetings and Exhibits provide ongoing global outreach, enabling participants to preview the lat-est research, expand their knowledge, and engage in a lively exchange of information, ideas, and educated opinions. AOCS mem-bers and other industry professionals look to AOCS meetings as an international forum to facilitate scientifi c advancements, net-working, and student involvement. Approximately 3,200 individuals took advantage of the many AOCS meeting and exhibition benefi ts during 2011—an increase of almost 200 over 2010. The AOCS Annual Meeting & Expo returned to Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, from May 1–4, 2011, for its 102nd gathering of fats and oils professionals. Held at the Duke Energy Center, the meeting and exhibit attracted a strong Midwestern contingent to its traditional domestic and international audience. Five Hot Topics expanded the breadth, scope, and timeliness of the core technical program by addressing such topics as the interdependency of AOCS disciplines, fragrance innovation, new dietary guidelines for oils and fats, the challenges of teaching lipid science, and new Summary vitamin D intake recommendations. 1,654 Attendees Attending delegates from Japan, still 45 Countries represented recovering from the devastating 468 Oral presentations earthquake and tsunami, were 210 Poster presentations honored for their dedication to AOCS at 5 Hot Topic Symposia a special reception prior to the Opening containing 25 presentations 79 Exhibiting companies Mixer. New events were introduced, including Speed Networking and the Newcomers’ Networking Breakfast, to familiarize fi rst-time attendees with AOCS and help them navigate the annual meeting schedule. In addition, two short courses were held prior to the Annual Meeting with 130 registrants: • Basics of Oilseed Processing and Refi ning • New Technologies in Oilseed Extraction and Edible Oil Refi ning Over 150 senior fats and oil executives from 31 countries met in Izmir, Turkey, for the Oils and Fats World Market Update , June 20–21, 2011. The two-day event was co-sponsored by AOCS, the Culinary Products and Margarine Industrialists Association of Turkey, and the Vegetable Oils and Fats Industrialists Association. The focus of the 31 oral Summary presentations included world oils and 155 Attendees fats markets update, worldwide trade 31 Countries represented issues and regulations, sustainability 31 Oral presentations for the oils and fats business, fi nancing supply chains, and global issues for the industry’s commodities. The World Conference on Oilseed Processing, Fats & Oils Processing, Biofuels & Applications , June 21–23, 2011, was hosted in Izmir, Turkey, to discuss the critical scientifi c issues Summary and technologies that aff ect the future 313 Attendees of the industry. In addition, two short courses preceded the World Conference and served a total of 80 attendees: • Basics of Oilseed Processing • Edible Oil Refi nery Optimization and Equipment Maintenance The 14th Latin American Congress and Exhibition on Fats and Oils was held October 19–21, 2011, in Cartagena, Colombia. The Congress was sponsored by the Latin American Section of AOCS and the cooperating organiza-tions of ASAGA, CORCHIGA, FEDEPALMA and SBOG were on board to assist with program development and marketing.
