Laboratory Proficiency Program (LPP)
In 2011, the Olive Oil series saw a significant increase in participation and a new series was added: Aflatoxins in Pistachios and Almonds.
Methods
The collaborative study on AOCS Official Methods Ce 1j-07, Determination of cis-, trans-, Saturated, Monounsaturated, and Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Extracted Fats by Capillary GLC, and Ce 1k-09, Direct Methylation of Lipids in Foods for the Determination of Total Fat, Saturated, cis- Monounsaturated, cis-Polyunsaturated, and trans Fatty Acids by Gas Chromatography, was completed.
Additions and Revisions to the methods compilation were prepared and published in September. These included new methods, revised methods, and the correction of minor editorial errors.
Expert Panels
Olive Oil
The AOCS Expert Panel on Olive Oil focused on the question of the relationship between chemical parameters and the loss of extra virgin olive oil sensory attributes. The panel is seeking instrumental methods to reduce the burden of tasting in numerous adequate oils to meet regional standards.
Process Contaminants
Meetings of the AOCS Expert Panel on Process Contaminants were held at the 102nd AOCS Annual Meeting and Expo in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, in May 2011 and at the 9th Euro Fed Lipid Meeting in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in September 2011. Items covered included updates on the publication status of AOCS methods and updates on the status of collection of collaborative study data. Informal meetings were hosted by MPOB at PIPOC in Kuala Lumpur with collaborators in Japan hosted by the Kao Corporation.
The AOCS/JOCS collaborative study of AOCS Official Method Cd 28-10, Glycidyl Fatty Acid Esters in Edible Oils was completed at the end of 2011. This method determines glycidyl (glycidol) fatty acid esters (GEs) in edible oils using double solid-phase extraction (SPE) and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) using HPLC.
AOCS Technical Liaison
Richard Cantrill, AOCS Technical Director, twice attended the International Olive Council (IOC) as an observer on the Expert Chemists’ Committee. He also led the U.S. delegation to ISO/TC 34/SC 11 and attended the plenary meeting of ISO/TC 34/SC 2. Cantrill acted as Secretary of the Inter-Agency Meeting and presented the meeting report to the Codex Committee on Methods of Analysis and Sampling. He also represented AOCS at the Codex Committee on Fats and Oils where fish oils, seed oils, and olive oil were major discussion items.
Technical Specialist Gina Clapper attended the National Biodiesel Board’s (NBB) Biodiesel Conference and Expo in February 2011. Clapper also represented AOCS interests at the ASTM International National Biodiesel Board’s meeting and ASTM International’s D02-Petroleum Products and Lubricants Committee meetings. She was invited to the NBB Biodiesel Technical Workshop as well.
Clapper attended the AOAC International meeting in New Orleans, and then received the Bruce Wasserman Young Investigator Award in recognition for distinguished contributions to the fi eld of cereal biotechnology at the AACC International meeting.
Clapper, acting as secretary for U.S. TAG activities, and Cantrill, acting as subcommittee secretary, hosted the third ISO TC 34/SC 16 (Horizontal methods for molecular biomarker analysis) plenary meeting in Beltsville, Maryland, USA in October 2011.
AOCS/USB Soybean Quality Traits Program
The Soybean Quality Traits Program continued to receive funding from the United Soybean Board (USB). Amy Johnson resigned in November 2011, and Christine Atkinson replaced her as project manager.
On behalf of the Soybean Quality Traits Program, Johnson attended the USB Seed Composition Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri, USA in February 2011 and presented an update on the NIR Applicability Study and Phase II of the amino acid study.
Other meetings Johnson attended included:
• Pittcon in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, in March 2011 to speak to manufacturers of miniaturized technologies such as mass gas chromatography/spectrometry.
• Commodity Classic in Tampa, Florida, USA, in March 2011 to attend American Soybean Association meetings and meet with meeting exhibitors.
• Ag Innovation Showcase in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, in June 2011. The Showcase offers a platform for dialogue, discussion, and networking in sectors including ag-bio, food production, biofuels, sustainable materials, bio-based products, farming technologies and animal health.
Cantrill and Johnson attended the National Conference on Weights and Measures, Grain Analyzer Sector in Kansas City, Missouri, USA to present information regarding future Moisture Meter/Air Oven Proficiency Testing and then hosted an SQT NIR Oversight Committee meeting. Cantrill and Johnson attended the SoyTech Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, and Cantrill and Atkinson attended the ASTA Corn & Sorghum and Soybean Seed Research Conference in Chicago, Illinois, USA, in December 2011.
